A Brief History of the Most Romantic Piece of Furniture; The Loveseat

Vintage Loveseat

Nothing is quite romantic like a loveseat. I mean, the name itself has the word love in it! But how did this piece come to be? Everything has an origin story and a loveseat is no different. To start, let’s define what an actual loveseat is. In layman’s terms, it’s a miniature version of a sofa designed to sit two people. But did you know, that was not its original intention?

Made for One

There was once a time, the 17th and 18th centuries to be exact, where women’s fashion involved hoops, petticoats, and an absurd amount of fabric. What was a girl to do if she wanted to sit down? The solution was a loveseat.

Back then, a loveseat was a simple expanded wood chair. With all the heavy fabric involved, it would cushion her as she sat on the thin seat. And that’s how it was until fashion evolved.

So How Did the Loveseat Get Its Name?

In the 19th century, women’s clothing became less poofy and more form-fitting. Most importantly, people realized there was space for two on that wooden seat we mentioned above. Unmarried couples of this era could sit closely together to have an intimate conversation without societal scorn or arousing suspicions. In other words, they could face each other to talk without actually touching. Thus, how this piece of furniture came to be known as a “loveseat”.

The Timeless Appeal of Loveseats

At one point, loveseats were a sign of wealth for the upper and middle class. However, with the start of the industrial revolution, loveseats became more attainable for all. By the 1970s, it became common for living room sets to include both the sofa and loveseat. Why have they endured?

Homes and living rooms through the years have become smaller. A loveseat accommodates these spaces, especially since they can seat two. Furthermore, they are as versatile as a sofa. You can find them in different styles and colors.
